The Family Tree is the fifteenth episode of Season 3 of Good Times and the fifty-second series episode overall. Written by Bob Peete, the episode, which was directed by Herbert Kenwith, premiered on CBS-TV on December 23, 1975.

Synopsis[]

During a school project, Thelma learns that James' father is alive and lives nearby. As a surprise for his birthday, she invites him over, but James wants nothing to do with him.

Storyline[]

Thelma asks her parents about her relatives as she has to write up the family tree for a school project. James says his father is dead, but Thelma finds out he is alive. Thelma invites him to visit, but James is not happy to see his father.

Plot summary[]

Researching the Evans family tree, Thelma (Bern Nadette Stanis) makes the startling discovery that her grandfather Henry, the father of James Evans (John Amos), is still alive. Eager to expedite a happy reunion, Thelma invites Henry home for James' surprise birthday party -- only to stand by, mouth agape, when an angry James rejects the old man. Richard Ward makes his first series appearance as Henry Evans.
