Synopsis Edit

While Florida is away in Cleveland for a family funeral, the Evans' family is hit with a double dose of unemployment after both James and J.J. lose their jobs. James' boss at Brady's puts him on a temporary lay-off and the movie theatre where J.J. works is closing down. Wanting to support his family, J.J. decides to join the U.S. Army.

James gets word that he is about to be "temporarily" laid off leaving JJ the only bread winner in the Evans household. Unfortunately, he finds out that the theater where he has been working is about to be shut down. He then takes drastic measures and decides to enlist in the army. However, James Sr. finds out that the rumors of his layoff were false and now must hurry to the induction center before JJ becomes Uncle Sam's latest recruit.

Plot summaryEdit

Things really look bleak for the Evans household when both James (John Amos) and J.J. (Jimmie Walker) lose their jobs. Determined to provide for his loved ones, J.J. prepares to "be all that he can be" by enlisting in the U.S. Army. William Christopher, who was appearing semi-regularly as Father Mulcahy on M*A*S*H when this episode was filmed, guest stars as the army doctor; on the other hand, series regular Esther Rolle (Florida) isn't in this episode at all.
