J.J.'s New Career: Part 1 is the seventh episode of Season 4 of Good Times as well as the sixty-eighth series episode overall. It is one-half of a two-episode story arc. Written by John Baskin and Roger Shulman, the episode, which was directed by Gerren Keith, premiered on CBS-TV, originally airing on November 10, 1976.

Synopsis[]

Unbeknownst to Florida, J.J. works with a few of his crooked friends to help support his family after Bookman threatens to throw them out because the rent is late. Thelma also considers dropping out of college to help the family.

Storyline[]

When J.J. loses his job, the family is short on rent and threatened with eviction. J.J. cannot find work at the unemployment office, unemployment compensation is at least three weeks out, so he needs to make some tough decisions.

Plot summary[]

In the first episode of a two-part story, the financially strapped Evans family again faces eviction by usurious landlord Nathan Bookman (Johnny Brown). If things don't get better soon, Thelma (BernNadette Stanis) may very well drop out of college to help support her family. Even worse, J.J. has agreed to accept a job as a neighborhood numbers runner.
